About Us

NETMCDO is the only annual conference specifically dedicated to developing and strengthening career services and entrepreneurship for musicians! Devote two days to music career issues and leave energized and motivated to better assist your students and alumni.

The conference is an opportunity to exchange ideas and information on assisting musicians in developing careers. We’ve kept the cost to a minimum and the networking, information-sharing, and peer-learning at a maximum.

Our conference is created and run by the group it serves. It is put on by and for career development professionals.

Conference Overview

Our 2012 conference theme is an age-old issue:

Art & Money: Friends or "Frenemies"? From the conceptual to the practical -- how these two relate.

Note: Each day will also examine the "State of the Field" in various ways, in addition to the Art & Money theme.

Due to the positive feedback from years past, we will be using "Open Space Technology" again this year for a portion of the conference.

Open Space Wha?!?

www.wikipedia.org explains: Open Space Technology (OST) offers a method to run meetings of groups of any size. ("Technology" in this case means tool — a process; a method.) OST represents a self-organizing process; participants construct the agenda and schedule during the meeting itself...OST seems to enable groups of any size to address complex, important issues and achieve meaningful results quickly. OST meetings have a single facilitator who initiates and concludes the meeting and explains the general method.

More traditional (tired-old, been-there) technology such as "Internet" and "PowerPoint" and "Computers" will be replaced by more user-friendly forms, such as flip-charts and magic-markers...

Who attends our conference?

We generally have 40 – 45 music schools and organizations represented at the conference, from universities and colleges, to training orchestras and conservatories. We’ve had a wide range of participants: career center professionals, faculty, support staff, and independent career counselors... Some attendees are brand new to the career services field and some general university career services staff seek to enhance their offerings for music students. This variety makes for rich discussions and great information and idea sharing. So bring along a colleague from your institution to get even more out of the conference.

NETMCDO holistic view: We have grown to realize that teaching, performing, advising, and administering are all part of being in career development -- so be prepared to be challenged on all fronts!

Benefits

Here are a few reasons for you (and your institution) to attend the network conference:

  • Gather up-to-date info on new services and programs for music career development in the U.S. and abroad
  • Hear how other institutions deal with similar issues
  • Learn how to maximize your time and effort
  • Get answers to your questions about music career development programs and services

Our Facilitator -- John Steinmetz

John Steinmetz will once again help us explore our conference theme, reflect on our work, re-envision our future, and get the most out of our conference time together.

John is a freelance bassoonist and composer, based in the Los Angeles area. He serves as an education consultant for computer and record companies. He writes and speaks about the state of the arts and about technologies of learning and expression: his article “Resuscitating Art Music,” which has been widely distributed in the concert music field, is on the web at http://www.munb.com/artx2.html

Our Venue -- Back to Manhattan School of Music!

This year, we are happy to be holding our NYC conference at Manhattan School of Music, where is Angela Beeching is now Director of the MSM Center for Music Entrepreneurship. The School is located on the upper west side of the city, at the intersection of 122nd Street and Broadway. It's convenient to the subway: take the uptown #1 train to 116th Street (map and travel info here: http://www.msmnyc.edu/About-MSM/Visit-MSM/Travel-Information)

Why Mid-January in NYC?

We meet on these dates to make it convenient for people to also attend both the Community Engagement meeting on January 13 (contact: tanya.maggi@necmusic.edu) and the Chamber Music America Conference, January 13–15, in NYC. CMA a terrific resource for info on performance, recording, funding and presenting issues in a range of genres (classical, jazz, and other musics). You can register online for CMA at www.chamber-music.org or call (212) 242-2022.

In addition, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference is January 6-10: http://www.apapnyc.org
